Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Yankees are currently the third oldest team in baseball. Thru 7 innings of baseball tonight, they looked every bit their age. At times this season, the Yankee offense has been predictably lethargic with runners in scoring position. Innings 1-7 had a similar feel, 1 solo homer and a whole lot of nothing else. I found myself reminicing of 2005, when the addition of Robinson Cano added youth and energy to an offense that was showing it's age. At times in the past few weeks, I have felt a growing necessity for a drastic move to change the dynamic of this offense, which, despite the slugging, can't seem to come up with the key hits that make a good offense a great one. I think fans would agree that the Yankee's starting pitchers have exceeded expectations in 2011. It's the Yankees offense that has failed to click with any consistency. Tonight, for a short period of time, everything came together. Well, sort of. The Yankees scored 2 in the 8th, but going into the 9th there had yet to be an offensive contribution from anyone not named Grandeson, Martin, or Cano. But one out in the 9th, Jorge Posada smacked a Frank Francisco fastball for a double to right field. After a Jeter ground out, Curtis Granderson (MVP) did what Curtis does, he carried the Yankees offense on his back. After driving in Chris Dickerson (who pinch ran for Posada) to tie the game, he stole second and scored the winning run on a Texiera single. Great win! Hopefully the start of something special. We shall see.
A few takeaways:
1. Great to see Jorge involved with a victory. Jorge has obviously been frusteraed with his play, as well as his situation. He had something to smile about tonight.
2. CC had a hiccup in the fourth, but he seemed to get more dominant as the game went on and he kept his team in the game despite the lack of run support. His W tonight was well deserved.
3. Curtis Granderson is playing like an MVP.
4. Finally some pie. We were spoiled in 2009. Nothing bad to say today. Walk off victories are so sweet, no reason to dwell on the negative.
